Mike Hurst became a record producer more by luck than judgement. When the Springfields broke up in October 1963 he started his own band with Jimmy Page, Albert Lee and Tony Ashton but found little success. In 1965 he started work for Mickie Most and Andrew Loog Oldham. In late 1965 he found a very young Cat Stevens and produced independently "I Love My Dog" and "Here Comes My Baby" and promptly signed him to Decca Records. From that point on, Mike had made it and for the rest of that decade went on to produce Marc Bolan, Spencer Davis Group, The Move, PP Arnold and Warm Sounds amongst others. By the '70s he had signed and produced Showaddywaddy and enjoyed 17 hit singles and 3 platinum albums. In the '80s he signed and produced Shakin' Stevens, and in the '90s Belle & Sebastian. For the first time ever Mike has trawled through his back catalogue of tracks he produced independently and has supplied 16 tracks for Volume 1 with Volume 2 planned for release in 2003. |
